The energy here is contagious

By Dr. Diane Bowen | Centered on Wellness | St. Simons Island, GA

Summer on St. Simons Island is one of my favorite times of year. The energy here is contagious — people are out on the water, gathering with family, enjoying the long evenings. But I’ll be honest with you: as a physician, summer is also when I see patients struggling most with low energy, hormone imbalances, and the quiet physical toll that heat and busy schedules can take on the body. At Centered on Wellness, my approach has always been whole-person, well-person care — which means looking at everything that affects how you feel, not just a single symptom. This summer, I want to share the strategies I recommend to my own patients for staying healthy, energized, and truly well from the inside out.

Replenish and Recharge with IV Nutrient Infusion Therapy

One of the most powerful tools we offer at Centered on Wellness is IV Nutrient Infusion Therapy, and summer is one of the best times to take advantage of it. When temperatures climb, your body loses essential vitamins and minerals through sweat and increased metabolic demand. Oral supplements help, but they must pass through the digestive tract, where absorption can be inconsistent. IV nutrition delivers vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the GI tract entirely and getting nutrients to your cells quickly and efficiently.

I love explaining this to patients because the concept is simple but the impact is real. Think of it as a precision refuel for your body. Each infusion is tailored specifically to your needs based on your lab results and clinical profile — this is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We sit down together, review your labs, and choose the infusion that matches exactly where your body needs support.

Here at Centered on Wellness, we offer several infusion options designed for different goals. Our most popular is the Myers’ Cocktail is our foundational infusion, packed with B-complex vitamins, Magnesium, B12, B6, and Vitamin C — excellent for combating fatigue, supporting immunity, and general wellness maintenance. Many of my patients make IV nutrition a regular part of their routine, coming in two to four times per month as a preventative and anti-aging approach.Sessions take place in our quiet tranquility room, where you can relax in a comfortable reclining chair, read, listen to music, or simply rest while the therapy does its work — most sessions run between 60 and 90 minutes. If you’ve been feeling run down, sluggish, or just not quite yourself this summer, nutrient infusion therapy may be exactly what your body is asking for. According to the National Institutes of Health, micronutrient deficiencies are far more common than most people realize and can significantly affect energy, immune function, and overall vitality.

Restore Your Balance with Personalized Hormone Therapy

Hormonal imbalance is one of the most underdiagnosed contributors to poor summer wellness — and in my experience, one of the most life-changing conditions to address. When your hormones are off, everything feels harder. You may notice fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix, mood shifts that seem to come from nowhere, weight that won’t budge despite your best efforts, or sleep that leaves you unrested. These are not signs that you just need to push through. They are signals from your body that something deeper needs attention.

At Centered on Wellness, our hormone balancing program is one of our most comprehensive services. We evaluate thyroid function, adrenal health, stress response, and reproductive hormones for both women and men. For women, this includes a full assessment of estrogen, progesterone, and related hormones that influence perimenopause, menopause, PMS, PCOS, and fertility. For men, we look closely at testosterone and vitality markers that affect energy, mental clarity, and physical performance. The endocrine system is complex, and I believe it deserves a careful, individualized approach — not a generic protocol.

When hormone therapy is appropriate, we use bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), which is derived from plant and animal sources and is designed to closely mimic the hormones your body produces naturally. The Endocrine Society recognizes that even small hormonal imbalances can cause wide-ranging effects throughout the body — which is exactly why we use comprehensive lab work rather than guessing. I want to understand the root cause of what you’re experiencing, not just managing the symptoms.

Summer heat can amplify the symptoms of hormonal imbalance — hot flashes become more intense, fatigue deepens, and the disruption to sleep worsens. This is a season when many of my patients finally reach their tipping point and decide they’re ready to do something about it. If that sounds like you, I want you to know that you don’t have to keep feeling this way. There is real, effective help available, and the path forward starts with a thorough evaluation.

I encourage you to take our hormone balancing quiz on the Centered on Wellness website as a first step. It takes just a few minutes and can help you identify whether your symptoms may be connected to a hormonal imbalance worth addressing.

Protect Your Skin — Your Largest Organ

As a physician who cares about your total wellness, I can’t talk about summer health without addressing sun protection. Georgia summers are beautiful, but they are also intense, and the cumulative effects of UV exposure are real. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher applied every morning and reapplied every two hours when outdoors. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.

What I tell my patients is this: sun damage is one of the most preventable contributors to premature aging, dark spots, and skin cancer, yet it’s also one of the most ignored. According to the CDC, unprotected skin can burn in as little as 15 minutes, and the damage may not become visible on the surface for up to 12 hours. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and lightweight protective clothing are all simple habits that make a real long-term difference for your skin’s health and appearance.

Summer Hydration: More Important Than You Think

Proper hydration in summer is something I genuinely feel passionate about, because it touches nearly every aspect of your health. Dehydration reduces energy, impairs concentration, strains the kidneys, and shows up visibly in your skin. The CDC’s heat health guidance emphasizes that you should drink water consistently throughout the day — not just when you feel thirsty, because thirst is a late indicator that dehydration has already begun.

I also want to mention that IV hydration is not just for people who are sick or recovering from illness. Our Performance Hydration infusion at Centered on Wellness is a wonderful option for active patients who want rapid, thorough rehydration along with muscle recovery support. It delivers fluids and replenishing nutrients directly into the bloodstream much faster than drinking water alone can achieve. For patients spending long hours outdoors this summer — at sporting events, on the water, or working outside — this can be a genuinely transformative treatment.

Keep Moving and Support a Healthy Weight This Summer

Summer’s longer days give us a wonderful opportunity to move more and invest in our physical health. Beach walks, swimming, paddleboarding, cycling — these are all joyful ways to stay active. However, Georgia heat and humidity can make outdoor exercise challenging, and I always remind patients to schedule activity during the cooler hours of early morning or evening. The CDC recommends taking frequent shade breaks and staying well-hydrated when exercising in high heat to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion.

For patients working toward specific weight goals, our weight management program at Centered on Wellness provides medically guided, personalized support. I want to be clear: this is not a diet plan handed to you on a piece of paper. It’s a collaborative process built around your health history, your metabolism, your hormonal profile, and your goals. When we address weight alongside hormone health and nutrient status, patients often find that the results come more naturally and feel far more sustainable.

Optimizing Your Wellness Means Looking at the Whole Picture

I founded Centered on Wellness on a belief I hold deeply: that true health is not just the absence of disease — it’s the presence of vitality. Each of us is created uniquely, which means your path to wellness will not look exactly like anyone else’s. That’s why everything we do here begins with a thorough evaluation, honest conversation, and a treatment plan built specifically around you.

Summer is the perfect season to invest in that vision of total wellness. Whether you’re ready to explore IV nutrition, take the first step toward addressing a hormonal imbalance, or simply talk through how you’ve been feeling, my team is here for you. We also offer nutrition assessment and management, gut health support, stress management, and premium supplements to complement your care plan. We look at each person as a whole — and what we often find is that what shows up on the surface of the skin or in your energy levels is a direct reflection of what’s happening internally.

I also want to gently address mental wellness this summer. The change in routine, travel, family demands, and the relentless pace of warm-weather social calendars can increase stress in ways that quietly undermine your health. Prioritizing sleep, building in real rest, and reaching out when you need support are all part of optimizing your wellness. You do not have to figure all of this out alone.
